The Voigts left on Tuesday and such a pleasure to have them here--so positive and fun loving! It's been great to have Gillian and Bryson her fiance here as well. Friday night I was sorting through stuff in my office downstairs and they just came down and sat on the love sack and talked to me while I sorted. Bryson played the guitar and sang. Kind of a funny story. I was in church and was talking to one of the members about his Thanksgiving plans. "Oh, I'm just going over to some friends house and cook a turkey for Thanksgiving." He works at Costco and got a free turkey and had planned to deep fry it. I told him about all the houses that get burned to the ground on Thanksgiving from people that don't know how to deep fry turkeys and the oil and fire gets out of control so told him to be careful. As it turns out, he is really good friends with Bryson and it was MY house they came to on Thanksgiving. I was in in Idaho but thank goodness, they decided not to deep fry the turkey! He saw my picture on the fridge and made the connection.
Tuesday, I was asked to speak at BYU to the MBA Product Management club. There were about 50 people there and I did a presentation on what it's like to be a product manager. It must have been well advertised on campus as I had several emails from kids I know on campus. A friend of Jessica's, Derek Pando, was there. A kid that I hired as an intern a couple of summers ago, and Eric and David Germann came--so good to see them and catch up! I think the presentation went well. I learned some going back to my notes from product management that we need to implement.
Up at 4 am Wednesday for a day trip to Phoenix where the weather was absolutely beautiful. See the sunrise shot from the plane. Four hours of meetings with Intel which went well and then back to South Jordan by 4:30 for the grand opening open house for our new office until 8 pm. Had Spence Eccles from the Governors office of economic development speak to us. Thursday catching up and getting ready for new hire orientation this week.
Friday night...sorting and packing for the move. Still wrangling with mortgage bankers but I think were close. The sorting and packing has been rather traumatic. Going through all my files from college, Bechtel, MBA school, Clegg Engineering, McGraw-Hill, Novell and several others including Cogito, Move and now HireVue. I was a little overwhelmed at the volume of learning, meetings, notes and work and what little lasting there really is to show for it all. There's a lesson there I'm trying to figure out. It was just so welcome to have Frank and his little family stop by for hugs and a little vist--they were down doing their candy houses.
Anyway, the house is all "sorted". Now just packing and organizing as I pack which takes time. Finding that the best method is see-through plastic containers from Costco (thanks Michael Hunter!). Plan is to pack through this week and hopefully move next and have all wrapped up by Dec.15th! Wish me luck!
Love,
Peter
