Vacation 2011

I started working at HireVue on September 1 last year. In the employment agreement, I negotiated 3 weeks of vacation and since you "use it or lose it" and I'd only taken three days so far, I went on vacation from August 4th to the 15th. Normally, I wouldn't bore you with my vacation itinerary but since it was mostly a family vacation, thought I would give you the full run down. Here goes...

Kent and I have been trying to get the the plane recarpeted for a year now and when I called Jimmy Carter (not the president, the plane upholstery guy) on Wednesday, he said, "Bring it in tomorrow!" So day one, I flew the plane to Pocatello where he will be working on it over the next 10 days. Absolutely beautiful day and the mountain tops so green! Flew over Sundance, Park City, Mountain Green and then over Sardine Pass and Malad and on into PIH with a Sky West plane chasing me in to land on runway 3.

Dad and Mom met me there and we shopped a little in Pokey before heading home to Grace. Great to see them. Mom has been picking raspberries and Dad feeding chickens and pheasants. It was Fair week and Kiana, Dani and Maniah showed their sheep for judging. This year Kiana got grand champion (last year Dani did) and with the help of their good neighbors had good looking animals and got some good cash (plus the sheep back). They also had other items in the fair building along with Abby.

I left the fair and drove the Cadillac back to Orem and then attended Uncle Philip and Aunt Nona's 50th anniversary event. WOW! What a party! The kids had completely renovated a ward cultural hall to be a 50's diner, complete with soda fountain, juke box and a life size cut out of Elvis. They served hamburgers and hot dogs, had a wonderful and timely program followed by a swingin dance. Fun to see all of their kids and their kids' kids. Here's a link to all of the photos.

Saturday Amy and I went to the movie 17 Miracles with Aunt Eloise, Uncle David and Aunt Shirley and afterwards to an Italian restaurant (thinking of Jamie) for dinner and good conversation and catching up. That night, Michael Hunter and I caught another movie (Cowboys and Aliens) which was fun. Sunday...last meeting of the school year and many of the students are moving to other apartment complexes so it was their last Sunday in the ward. Gearing up for a whole new batch in a couple of weeks.

Monday, I drove back to Idaho for the start of my "work therapy vacation." On the way, I stopped and ate some of Melissa's divine cinnamon rolls with Gavin, Sophie, Andrew and Ryan and then visited Frank at his work at Lifetime. We went to the company store where he showed me all of the things they make including these cute little storage sheds.

I've been having problems with my hip and leg and I think most of it is just sitting so much so looked forward to just being away from the desk and computer. It's been an awesome week. The weather in Idaho has been just fantastic with severe clear skies, gentle breezes at night and temperatures in the high 70s and low 80s. Projects completed this week include mowing, spraying for weeds, thinning out the lilac bushes, digging the former horse pasture soon to be ball field/camping grass, and a first pass at cleaning the barn. The barn was an adventure as I haven't even touched it since buying the place. I found 5 lariats and three 50-gallon barrels of crushed soda cans.

It has also been wonderful to spend time with Dad and Mom. Dad and I fixed a hole in the water pipe. Mom is picking beans and raspberries every day then fixes her harvest into delicious shortcake. Mom also came down to my house and I helped her pick some of the pie cherries which she turned in to cobbler. Here are a couple of pictures of them.

Friday, I drove to Logan and picked up Ben and Dawson and we journeyed up Logan Canyon to Tony's Grove where we strapped on our backpacks and headed for White Pine Lake. It was absolutely gorgeous! So green and so many wild flowers all in bloom. The lake is nestled at the base of Mount Magog (between Mt. Gog and Mt. Magog) and was surrounded by cliffs and pines. We found a nice camp site and then Ben and Dawson went to fishing while I hiked around the lake. People said fishing was good but only with the right bait which was live worms. Next morning, I found a place to dig them up with my bare hands and both Ben and Dawson caught a fish. Good time, good food and good company and the full moon which was spectacular coming up through the pines! It was beautiful as the cliffs lit up and you could see the still lake and the mountain in the moonlight.

After we broke camp, we headed hiked back over the pass towards Tony's Grove then dropped packs and proceeded to climb Mt. Naomi. It's 9980 feet tall and turned out to be quite a hike. Near the top, most of the trees disappeared and there was quite a bit of snow and glaciers. After sitting on top and enjoying the fantastic view, we slid down one of the glaciers and drank from the cold waters flowing below them. Great to spend time with Ben and Dawson and glad they were able to go.

One of the highlights of the week has been watching the moon every night. It was nearing full and was full on Friday. I brought out my telescope and just was amazed at the detail and beauty...only word I can think to describe is glorious. No good way to share via pictures but here's an attempt--taken with my iPhone through the telescope eyepiece.

So Sunday afternoon now at the end of vacation and just waiting for Paula and Jessica to arrive. Jess is going to ride back to Utah with me and then on to Texas with Lisa Brown on Wednesday. It's been a very good vacation and I've enjoyed seeing and spending time with so many of the family. My goal for next year is not just one week in August off in Idaho but the WHOLE MONTH!!!
